Melodyne Studio Multi Tracks

Post by TrevsAudio »

Hey guys.

I just upgraded to Melodyne 5 Studio edition. [Good Black Friday deal BTW]

There's a lot of videos out there about editing multi tracks, but I can't find any on how to load them into Melodyne. The Track button is greyed out.

Any ideas?

EDIT: I contacted Celemony support and they report as follows:

Mixcraft only offer an ARA-integration based in Clip-modus so you do not have multiple track here.

However you can use the feature when working like this.

Good one, Trev. The standalone affords that feature. Enjoy Studio! So many more options.

Hi all, thanks Trevs for the update, I noted the same issue after upgrading from Melodyne editor to studio today. Based on the instruction from Celemony in the link you provided, (Asking - - ) Sounds like we need to "Transfer" each track that is being processed with melodyne to enable the multi track feature? So, IE, Vocal 1, 2, 3, is three different "transfers". Sound right?

I agree though - - like what I see so far!

Hi Mike.

I haven't tried it out yet, but I followed up with this question: 'Do I need to use Melodyne as a separate plugin on each track? Or should I mix down the tracks I want and bring them into the stand-alone version.
Thanks.
Trevor'

To which they replied: 'yes, you would need to insert Melodyne on each track in the Mixcraft mixer where you need it.
Melodyne studio will allow you to see all tracks in the user interface in that case.'

Thanks Trevs - good to know. This is the way I used to do it anyway - with the "transfer" (kind of real time") process, will be a bit slower in the beginning but the benefits are substantial. Fortunately this is pretty much a one-time deal once the final take is recorded to get that step done.

I am wondering if we can "transfer" multiple tracks at the same time? Never tried it.

I'm sure the team at MX will get this on the list of to-do's down the road.

EDIT - played with the multiple tracks this morning. It works well and is very convenient for workflow. I am working with two vox tracks and a bass guitar that has (or had) intonation issues.

I did transfer one at a time, but found this on their FAQ:

In the plug-in: You see a header for every instance of Melodyne that you have opened in your project. There are no mute or solo buttons and no volume fader in the header, as these functions are already provided by your DAW. Instead you will see a Transfer button for every instance, and you can transfer-enable as many instances as you like swiftly from a single plug-in window.

Hey Mike. I'm still baffled by this  I spent all afternoon trying to get just two guitar tracks (a duet) to work. No dice.

They are on individual tracks - track one and 2. I have a Melodyne vst instance on both of them, but still can't get track mode to function.

Could you explain (for Dummies) how you did yours? :D

Thanks!

Hey Trevs. Yeah took me a few tries, I saved a mix as a test and had to get the hang of it.

First I assigned melodyne as an effect (first effect of course) on each track I wanted - these were Bass guitar, VOX lead, and VOX Harm 1. All tracks were already live recorded in real time.

Next was to click one of the melodynes, activate the transfer on ALL THREE tracks, or two in your case, (SEE SCREEN SHOT) but only in ONE instance of melodyne, IE the Lead VOX track. You can right click in the area I circled to rename your tracks as well. Next, ran my song back to 0 with the transfer enabled on all three tracks, and start the playback. I let the song run all the way out to transfer, and once completed, stopped, saved (I do that alot LOL), and closed two of the three melodyne instances that were on my screen.

Read on for some other things I noticed if you want - -

First, slow down. I crashed a couple of times due to moving around as fast as I am used to. Once I slowed down a bit things seem fine. (System specs below in my sig).

Second, Sometimes tracks that are "grayed out" on the blobs will play anyway, but seemed when I stopped the transport and let the dust settle that went away.

Next, the blobs from a given track sometimes wont sound while adjusting, I noticed if I select that particular track in melodyne as my working track this does not happen. So lets say I cannot hear the bass guitar when adjusting blobs. I would then go to the bass track and select THAT melodyne, and viola. Prolly user fail, but it's a learning curve for sure.

Last, as far as "Clip mode", I don't think we can do that until MX gets ARA2 supported for melodyne, but I admit a weak understanding in this area.

I hope all this blabbering helps! Keep me (us) posted how it goes :)

Please allow me to chime in here:

I think that au contraire not the benefits but the losses are substantial - dramatic even.

That way you basically get rid of a decade in development at the push of a button.
If you use the old transfer-method (how do you even manage to do that - the button should be gone if you use the VST3 in an ARA-capable host)
it means you don't use ARA at all, which again means an enormous amount of functionaility disappears.

It's of course your personal choice, but I want to warn anyone else that they completely loose all the ARA 2 advantages when doing so.

You need to tick "show track list" from the "Options"-menu at the top.

Having looked around a bit more in Mixcraft now I think I know what your problem might be:

If you access Melodyne from the Sound-tab in the Details Area, it is functionality-wise somewhat different and
with that the multitrack-option absent.

In order to access the latter, you need to open Melodyne from the track-header or the mixer instead.

Cant disagree Jens, however after using the multitrack, being able to have all the tracks on one screen outweighed the time it took to transfer the tracks. But, your point is valid!

Yes, I would agree with that as it this feature is a godsend - but you can actually have that with ARA too, so no functionality is lost due to using it (i.e. ARA). :-D

(I think it's actually somewhat confusing that the transfer-button is even there to begin with, and afaik Mixcraft is actuall the only host making it accessible (I didn't know that was possible - apparently it's part of the ARA (2) specs to be able to enable/disable manual transfer).)

OK, Jens I think you are more technically savvy than I, so here is a question (I hope I can explain myself LOL)

The ARA and ARA2 I see referred to is where we would simply add Melodyne, and it pops up on the track without needing to "transfer", versus what we are talking about here, which is running the track through - IE transfer?

Adding Melodyne without having to "transfer" is how I always did it up until the studio upgrade. (Prior version was Editor)

Hope that made sense...?
