Gathering files and re-saving

Post by Limbo506 »

Hi,
I have some unfinished projects saved in Documents/Mixcraft Projects. But, I foolishly have wav files scattered around other places on my hard drive.
Is there a way to gather them all together if I re-save a project to 1 location? Problem is, I'm not sure where all the bits are.

I'm thinking of something like collect all and save like Ableton has.
Some of my projects are nested inside their own Mixcraft folders within Documents/Mixcraft Projects, but some are just a single save file in Documents/Mixcraft Projects .. and I don't know where they are pulling their wavs or oggs etc. from.

Thanks very much in advance for any help.

Thanks for the quick reply.
I just did what you showed and I think I understand now. I can see all the sound files in the folder I copied to. Are the wav files, effects and all normally packed inside of the .mx9 file? Is that why you normally never see them in explorer?

Last question - After I save them by the method you pointed to and delete all my scattered wavs, what's your preferred method to save a project?
What happens with me is I download a wav from the internet to my desktop and mix it in with my song, but then I still have this file on my desktop.

Thanks again!
Jimmy

EDIT: If a folder is always created when you save a project, then I guess in the future I need to do save as so a folder is created .. and then open explorer and add any external files I want to use inside that folder .. does that make sense?

Hi,

When you start a new project, a temporary folder is created with a name like "Mixcraft 10 Project 23." If you select "Save," Mixcraft will ask for a name for the project, and it will automatically rename that temporary folder to whatever you name your project. Any audio recordings you make in that project will go into the project folder.

Instead of putting your wav files on the desktop, you could put them directly into the project folder to keep things organized.

By default, the project folders go into a Mixcraft Projects folder that's inside your Documents folder.

The Document folder will be on your C drive. So most people will always change that to a Data drive if you have that option.
The first thing that I do after installing any software is go into preferences and change the default folder location to a Data drive.
So my Data drive has individual folders for each Software I use. Mixcraft has its own folder and all projects are stored there. In that folder is also 3 other folders.
Audio, Midi and Exports.
If I have audio files from somewhere else I copy them to the Audio folder First before I drag them into the Daw.
Same with midi files. Either that or directly to the project folder if it’s started already.

Having scattered files is certainly a dangerous thing for that project in the future.

I can concur with this. I made the mistake of assuming that Mixcraft automatically embedded the external loops and sample files used in my projects....until I changed PCs and got greeted with loads of 'Missing sample files' messages and numerous blank tracks. Now I also create a separate folder within the Project folder, copy all my working files into it and load into Mixcraft from there. Any unused audio files are deleted when the project is completed. At least I'm now confident that everything is stored and moved around in it's entirety.
