Making MIDI and Original Audio Match Up

Post by rcamp48 »

Many of you have played back midi file with Mixcraft, and many of you have played back original audio with Mixcraft , but have you ever thought about recording both, one at a time , starting with a vinyl copy of a song in track one and the MIDI copy converted to audio in track two. This can be a lot of fun , especiallly making the two match up. Right now I am screen recording just that trying to keep it small in length, I am using Night Moves from Bob Seger, and if I can get both to sync then I will have something special.

Quite often the beats in the original audio do not match up with the beats in the MIDI that is turned into audio, all you have to do is record both separately , and once you have recorded both (one at a time , they come from different sources) all you have to do is edit and select all, then match up the beats on both tracks. Works liek a charm.

It takes a lot of experimenting to get the audio just right on both tracks , but it can be done and near perfect, trial and error does help quite a bit. What you want to do is make the audio form the original track just a tad louder that your MIDI track (turned into audio).

Greg: Can you please move this entire thread to Mixcraft 9 Tips , as I did not notice the thread for Mixcraft 9 tips until after I had posted. Thanks , Russ

I spotted this.
This all only works if the creator of the midi file was true to the original version.
I matched up Love Shack by B52
What I did was took the original audio and using Melodyne I extract the tempo map. You can export it and open it in Mixcraft then you drag the audio to the project. Disabled snap and line up the first downbeat to like measure 2.
The tempo map should match the audio and all the downbeats are in sync. If there’s anything out of sync you can simply edit the tempo track using the marker list

Next I used stem separation. Now I have your attention.

Now drag the midi file in and it should follow the tempo map. You will need to line up the first measure.
I only found near the end of the song the midi composition was a little wrong so I simply fixed it to match the original.

The midi and the song otherwise in perfect sync and because of the stems I had control over the mix.
I added a few missing horn parts to the midi.
Having the original version allowed me to accurately reproduce it in the midi.
So this was how I created an awesome backing track for the song.
Live solo performer using Backing tracks I make using Midi instruments.
Singer songwriter. Midi and recording music since 1986. ( yes I'm old! )
