Recording acoustic guitar

Post by silveralex »

Looking for any tips or tricks for recording acoustic guitars with a microphone . I only have a Shure 57 and am recording into Mixcraft using a focusrite Scarlett .

It sounds fine actually but the main issue I run into is that my recording ends up with a lot of pick noise . Just wondering if there’s ways to reduce the clicking sound a bit .

Hi,

You might try a dynamic EQ. Find the frequency of the pick click, and use a dynamic EQ to bring it down when it occurs.

Mixcraft comes with TB FIX4. In general, find the offensive frequencies, lower them a bit and increase the Q to tighten the band. Click on the Comp button to turn on compression. Then adjust the compression graph and settings to reduce the frequencies further when they are above a certain threshold.

Each point on the parametric EQ can have it's own compression graph and settings.

You could try moving the mic or angling it differently. EG if you've got it pointed at the body or bridge try moving it to point somewhere near the 10th or 12th fret and maybe aimed away from the pick a bit. I've had some success by having the mic lower than the guitar and angling it upwards towards the lower bout.

Thanks everyone! Lots of good tips there (and that looks like a very helpful video).
Will try a few things out.
