Find bpm for guitar riff
Hey all,
I'm sure there's an easy way to do this and I was up way too late last night trying to figure it out, which has added to my confusion. I just got EZdrummer2 and am building drum tracks (getting there anyway). But have been struggling with finding this out.
If I have a guitar riff, record it into MC, how can I find the tempo/bpm of the riff? I know you can put it to bpm that you select but is there a way that MC will tell me what the bpm is/are.
Again, I'm hoping that this isn't a totally silly question, but with learning EZD2 I've been a bit obsessed with drums and think I can't see the forest through the trees. I'm fully awake and not in the weeds of drums right now so hopefully I'll be able to understand!
Thanks!
M

Re: Find bpm for guitar riff
Most algorithms that detect beat are pretty reliant on transient intensive audio. So its pretty hard and generally highly unreliable for use in audio that lacks much obvious beat in the signal.
In a situation where it is needed, if I can sense the measures lengths I have hacked down the back door by "fudging it" a bit and fiddling with tempo settings until the grid lines up, but keep in mind, if the piece wasnt recorded to a tick, drums or another time keeping track, the tempo likely wanders enough to make this an extra difficult task requiring a lot of time.
Another tip, using "tap tempo" can often help get you close too.

Thanks Mark, I figured as much, just thought I'd ask.
Actually, forget bpm, I want someone to come and just write and record for me! And it better be good! LOL

Send me the riff, I might get a few minutes over the weekend to fiddle with it.

Doesn't the sound tab show the BPM?

Thanks Funk,
Yeah, I knew about that but didn't know how useful it would be without a beat, just a guitar. I'll give it a shot though.

Like I said, It's not a big deal and I'm certainly able to figure out a beat with a metronome. Just thought there was a bell or whistle that I was overlooking.

Re: Find bpm for guitar riff
Yes, there's a thousand ways to detect the beat and interpret that as a tempo. If there's a beat to detect.
Apologies if I was wrong, but my interpretation of the question, (and it is a fairly common snag), where we have a sound or track that lacks the detectable signature of a beat, and therefore creates a challenge that the common beat detection methods do not offer a solution for.....
"Guitar riff." Generally speaking, unless it is a pretty obvious choppy shuffle or some other rhythm track,(And often, perhaps even then) isn't going to work in beat detective, warping or any other automated solution I am aware of, thus my answer.
Again, if my assumption was incorrect, apologies.
Of course the real correct answer was perhaps, "record to a click or drum track." But the question was posed after that horse done fled the barn.
And anyway, pointing that out would be a job for.......

You were right Mark, and therefore not awarded the coveted bars of Captain Obvious!
I just have a bunch of guitar tracks that I think I can start working on. I got EZD2 which is awesome and it's gotten me inspired to try to make some magic happen! lol
BTW, EZD2 is absolutely incredible! Only had it for a bit and am absolutely loving it! One of the best music investments I've made, no question.

Love it. Ez mix and Ez keys also fantastico.
My favorite Ez drum expansion is the Indie Folk Ezx.
