Listen to a fav song, and change tempo

Post by msnickybee »

I started doing this more and more, as I'd got out of the habit.
Import a fav song into a spare track, and listen to it. Listen to each L and R. Analyse the tempo. Look at it through some meters like "SPAN". See if it's a victim of the loudness wars by squinting at the waveform - lots of dynamic range, lovely!

And in doing this, I reminded myself of something I was mansplained years ago, about how crucial it is to *change the tempo" even when recording digitally and fully in the box.

So almost coincidentally as part of researching a new song I looked at a favourite of mine Strawberry Blonde by the mighty Ron Sexsmith, which uses a drum machine, but speeds up a little from around 121 or so up to 124 ish bpm by the end.

It adds more of a sense of racing to the finish, it's coming...that kind of thing, as we all play in reality.

So that's my tip. That's what I'm doing in my next song.....

Good tip IMO. And your right, it can be a creative tool for adding a touch of suspense or building tension.

Sometimes the mood calls for a gradual slowing. I have also heard a few songs where just the chorus was just slightly sped up.

Now Nicky, gonna have to explain "mansplained" to me. :D

I'm listening, so I've edited my post to remove any accidental/unintentional reference to any nice person or persons unknown. Ha ha! 8)

I haven't visited those specifically, but find most people everywhere nearly intolerable.
Many people online hide behind anonymity and freely reveal their most undesirable characteristics.

One of the best things about this forum is that most of the people seem to have successfully evolved a little past average. Well most of the time. 8)

Nicky, if I ever am detected in any way of resembling a "mansplainer" just reach out and poke me with a large heavy object to remind me such behaviour is unacceptable! I may be opinionated, but we can talk about it.

I always write with the best of intentions and respect, but, sometimes (I think) get it wrong and have to do a speedy edit.
Bottom line is, I'm still working on my literature skills, Its very easy to come across wrongly.
Have a nice weekend all, I'm off to finish the garden shed/summerhouse I've started (if the British weather lets me). 8)
