My kind of thing is to mix quite stereo right from the start, which is naughty I know (against every rule book), and orchestrate more stereo strings for emphasis. True stereo is the thing - similar parts or harmony notes or a different take, although we're getting into double tracking there.
I find the whole stereo thing fascinating (even more than EQ).
The reason I mention this is how I try to leave space for the vocal, carving out that space if you like.
