I've been having fun with this the last few days, written in Poland, and I record a lot of acoustic, struggle with transients and attack, and always messing with tape saturation, multiband limiting blah blah
And, I guess with digital, it's a constant battle against that harshness. So for me, an aggressive compressor and or limiter doesn't help, especially for my style of music.
Much as I've been a fan of "Limiter no.6" for its Lookahead ability when properly configured, I do like this!
It's called Frontier, and is free

I've only been trying it on the master bus, but its ability to tame harsh transients will see me messing with it more! It's simple looking to use too, which helps my brain....
Adaptive limiting? Didn't know you needed it?
