Micro fades?

I'd like to test the new clip micro fade feature (I should, I entered the Bugzilla feature request).

How is this accessed?

I'm psyched going in and closing bugs and feature requests!

My biggest disappointment so far is that there's still no routing of MIDI output from plug-ins. I would have liked to be able to collapse lanes, but that's a UI feature, and there are other UI improvements to offset it.

Hi,

We decided some of those MIDI routing features weren't going to make it into 9.0 due to the complexity of the task. We'll see what happens in 9.3 or whatever.

In regard to the micro fades, they are tucked away on that little-seen audio tab in Sound details:

And if you want them always on, that option is in Project preferences.

Note that they are applied outside of the envelope, so you would have the fade, but you won't see it in the clip envelope. It's pretty tiny - it was set to 2 ms at one point. I'm not sure whether that was increased a bit.

Eric V. loves this feature. Anybody who records a lot of audio might find it quite handy.

Cool!

I also just now noticed that it's available from the right click context menu, under Properties.

The little triangle indicators to show that the clip has been micro-faded are fab. Really nice touch.

(now if we could get a keystroke for it....)

I slip-edited the "Kick" track in "The Easy Ones" so that it would have a nice big click in it, then went down to the Sound Tab and toggled the blue triangle on and off and it made no audible difference.

What's my next step?

(one thing I noticed: that clip is normalized)

Hi,

As I mentioned, the micro fade is extremely tiny. It really is micro - like 2 ms or so. So, if you have a 250 ms artifact at the end of the clip, the micro fade is not going to cover it, and having a micro fade that takes 250 ms to fade out would not be a good idea in all cases. So, there will still be times that you will still have to manually fade with the clip volume envelope. Micro fades are intended to just "take the edge off" so to speak.

That said, we should try to determine whether the current micro fade amount hits a sweet spot that fixes a lot of clips that start or end in the middle of a sound, but doesn't introduce noticeable audio artifacts.

Addendum: the micro fade was increased to 5 ms.

Edited to add: mx9 help file, page 98.

Not a beta tester, but I know I will use the micro-fade often. Any chance you can make the micro-fade time adjustable? Maybe a setting in preferences?

Eric V. has suggested the same thing. That would be a feature request at this point.
