What a difference!

Post by bigaquarium » Fri May 08, 2020 7:00 pm

Hi all,

So for all of these years I've been mixing with a cheap pair of Samson SR450 phones, and I just picked up some SR-850s last week, but tonight I picked up my first set of monitors (Alesis Monitor One) and holy cow, no wonder my mixes always sounded awful: I couldn't hear a darn thing! Night and day difference!

Yeah, IMHO good headphones and good studio monitors are must have items... It's nice to have a couple sets of monitors too, some good ones and some cheap monitors too.

Morning,

Yeah, I'm starting with the cheap ones, LOL. When I was in high school in the early 90's we had the exact same monitors and amp in the electronic music studio. It's just amazing what you can't hear with the headphones, especially the lows, and (ironically) the stereo image. Every mix sounds muddy as heck now!

Whether the wife likes hearing the music being made is yet to be discovered!

Tip: Monitor placement is also very important.

Yep! I have them at ear level, equilateral triangle and all that.

Gotta say they are intimidating, it is soooo different from what I'm used to that it's kinda scary. The headphones are like fool's gold, they tickle your ears and make everything seem easy and obvious, not so with the monitors! Just need to get a lot of seat time with them now!

Once you get use to them, you’ll always want them... Some engineers take their monitors with them to every studio.
