Audio Interface

Post by Mist001 »

Why do I need one?

I can plug a guitar/mic/anything really directly into my sound card via jack plugs. My midi controller plugs into USB.

So, what is the benefit of an audio interface?
Windows 10 64bit, Asus Prime B550 m-a, AMD Ryzen 5 3600, 16Gb 3200 ram, 2 x M2 SSD.
Mixcraft 9 Pro Studio, Donner DMK-25 Midi keyboard.

A number of possibilities.

Number one probably being the possibility of low latency multi tracking.

Then there is the probability of better mic pre amps, higher quality DAC's, better output amps for monitoring, possibly better control over input gain (and hopefully relevant metering), monitoring levels.
Multiple input channels, multiple output channels.
More appropriate input level/load for instruments vs mics.

If what you are using works for you, then I reckon you dont need one.
Stay in tune, Mark

Thanks. A preamp may be beneficial though. Can you suggest any decent, not too expensive ones?

Depends on the number of inputs you require...
I've always recommended Focusrite and have used them exclusively for 10 years. Anything from the single input Solo to the 18i20. I currently have a 2i2 and an 18i8
They're onto the 3rd generation but first and second are great too and can be found relatively cheap on platforms such as ebay.
And a bonus - there are loads of free 'plugin gifts' when you register
Of course, as they say in the classics, other brands are available too
