Anybody tried MidiRemap VST in Mixcraft?

Post by Sturdy »

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone has tried this new MidiRemap VST (link: https://www.midiremap.com/plugin ) that was announced today that converts MIDI from one drum mapping to another (like taking a track from an Addictive Drums midi and converts it to maybe GetGoodDrums or EZdrummer or a Kontakt kit, ect) ? Seems it can both translate from one format to another on the fly, but also has ability to to rewrite the midi in the new format on new track with appropriate midi routing. The MidiRemap website has long offered ability to convert a midi from one mapping to another creating a new midi file, but this realtime conversion within the daw seems like a pretty big deal in workflow process.

I'm thinking the rewriting midi part probably won't work in current Mixcraft with how plugin generated midi is handled, at least based on previous experiments with Scalar 2 and Melody Sauce generative midi, but not sure. Maybe the conversion to audio with new drum mapping can can be done by stacking instruments within a single track though? If anyone has tried this I'd be interested to know if/how it worked for you. I don't have an active midiremap account, but this seems a very interesting capability to me as I have lots of different virtual drums and managing/converting all the different midi formats is a pain when you only want to hear different drums.

Appreciate feedback if anyone has tried or tries this. I may try it soon just to see.

Had a demo mode, tried it out. It looks like "stacking" the vsts all in the same channel/track will work to produce audio.

- first put a drum midi clip in the single track. I used a general midi drum clip in the test.
- insert MidiRemap as the first virtual instrument on that same track. Selected Convert GM to another format in the MidiRemap VST. (I tried a couple of virtual drumsets to test, but used Addictive Drums 2 in the screenshot).
- insert the selected virtual drums below the MidiRemap utility on that same track. (Addictive Drums 2) in my screenshot.
- drum audio appropriate to the new mapping is produced.

Maybe something like LoopBe or something else could be used to get midi out and sent to another channel, but I haven't had success trying that in the past. I recall threads that some may have been successful, but I couldn't figure it out.

I know this doesn't answer your original question, but maybe it gets to where you want to go...

A free option is to try NoteMapper. https://codefn42.com/notemapper/

I've mentioned NoteMapper on many posts, partly because it fits the bill in so many situations. With a little work, you can create multiple drum mappings (mapping 1 set of MIDI keys to others) and save them as presets. Then when you play your drum machine VST or drag the MIDI clip into mixcraft, you can assign NoteMapper as the first instrument on the Change Instrument list then follow with your other drum VST. Choose the preset you defined for mapping the drums differently, then play.

And as far as mapping the drums to other tracks, I've written some responses here in the forums to some extent, but a nice visual tutorial that covers this is by "Fans of Mixcraft."

Instead of loopbe, I would recommend loopMIDI:
