Recording system audio

Hi - I just wondered if the new version allows for recording audio coming thru the system, like a YouTube clip, for example?
So many times, I just want the audio off something (at the moment it's a Jaco Pastorius track) so I can play along/cover it, within Mixcraft.
Any help?

Hi,

Yes you can record system audio in Mixcraft. I do it all the time. You need to choose source in the left column. Click the little arrow next to arm and you'll see the options. For me it shows up as Stereo Mix. If it doesn't show for you, there might be a windows setting that needs to be enabled.

Yeah, I think Microsoft/computer manufacturers starting hiding Stereo Mix, and on some computers, it's not even available. Probably for copyright concerns. If you don't see that recording option when you arm the track in Mixcraft, then you can go into the Windows Sound Control panel, right-click on the list of recording devices to show disabled devices, then right-click on stereo mix to enable it.

Microsoft also doesn't make the sound control panel very easy to even find in Windows 11.

It's also possible with a TRS to TRS stereo cable. One end in the headphone jack of you audio interface; the other in whatever channel of the interface you choose. Just select stereo in the track panel.

For YouTube videos (if it's audio only), I use this website. Just copy and paste the URL for a free mp3 copy.

"What you Hear" or "Stereo Mix" (depending on the systems audio) is turned off by default in both Windows 10 and 11.
Try going to Windows / system / Sound, and on the right hand side should be Sound control Panel. Click to open and then open the recording tab and right click inside the box.
You should see something like "show Hidden devices" or "Show Disabled devices" as well as "Show Disconnected devices". Make sure both are ticked and exit. The appropriate input should now show up in the Mixcraft mixer ready to arm.

With Windows 11, you go into Windows sound settings and look for the More Sound Settings option:

With Windows 10, the option is still called Sound Control Panel, and it's in the upper right section of Windows Sound Settings.

Thanks for that - I kind of knew about the selct device/enable thing, but it doesn't show 'system, sound' or 'windows audio' or similar.
So I'll probably stick with Audacity to capture a sound from an external source and take it into Mixcraft.
Thanks everyone - I'll post the Jaco Pastorius thing when I get round (eventually) to playing it!
