The 5th Single - Shadow

Post by chrisshort »

Shadow is the pivitol part of the concept album where one of our main characters is fighting for emotional survival and freedom. A truly viseral and heartfelt piece that culminates in an epic showdown with the incredible guitar solo and cinematic conclusion!

Featuring the haunting vocals of bina once again and guitar solo by Joao Corciero of Portugal.

Nicely done for sure. Just one comment and question. To my ears and on my monitors, the mix sounds a bit too high frequency focused, and it's pronounced even more with the sibilance on the vocals. At 2:47 the song gets more dramatic and I think the sound could be fuller with more low end focus there.

Anyway, my question is: what Piano are you using? It sounds nice and I'm struggling to find the right piano sound for the song I'm working on now...

Good job!

Thanks for the comments. I don't profess to be an expert and I'm still learning. I kind of stayed away from the low end as I always ended up mudding the waters and made the overall mix unclear most of the time. I will revisit it for the full album release and bring more into the low end properly.

The paino on this one was the Pianissimo, usually at default. Processing on the track with TB Compressor and TB Parametric EQ. Processing on the Bus OldSkool Verb and CLA Vocals Stereo.

Personally I thought this was superb. Definitely preferred the vocals on this. Mix was excellent on my Tannoy and Ram studio monitors. I listened to it on YouTube. It deserves more views and likes than it is getting. When I get the time I will hunt down the rest of your work.

Regarding the sibilance in the vocal. I don't think it's an EQ thing. Could be the mic choice or positioning. If the mic is head on to the mouth, try positioning above and slightly to one side pointing down. Don't have a pop shield too close to the mic.

Thanks for the review! You can find the rest of my current releases on that youtube Channel.

As far as the sibilance, that is most likely my fault with some overly processed stuff. It doesn't come through on the Mixcraft session but I am hearing it on the mixdown on certain Un-EQ players. I've been trying to improve it for the Full Album release (Crowdfunding) which will feature all the tracks in the proper order along with ambient transitions between each song.
