How does Mixcraft handle samples?

Hi - I'm confused.
I have a project that uses the OMNI sampler for the drum tracks. Yesterday, when I opened the project from another Windows partition, OMNI couldn't find the samples I'd previously used so I copied them to the project folder and loaded them from there.
But now I see that I have *two* copies of each sample in my project folder - the one that I copied there and another which has a number - e.g. [18] - appended to it.
What gives? Previously it *hadn't* copied them (which is why it couldn't find them) but now it does?
