Can Mixcraft 10.5 open GM2 type 1 files (internet and commercial MIDI’s) and automatically set track instruments and channel numbers like all versions of Cakewalk? Most of Cakewalk alternative DAW’s don’t seem to be able to do this unless you make templates!

It should work as far as I know, give it a try! Open the MIDI file by clicking on Mixcraft's File menu and selecting Open Project.

GM2 is just and extension of GM that has certain requirements in terms of simultaneous notes and extended batch/patches . I'm not a programmer for Mixcraft or anything like that but have a little bit of familiarity with MIDI. But because I don't know how MC was programmed, what I'm about to write may be nonsense:

I'm guessing since the Acoustica Instruments have an "n:n <instrument name>" convention when selected in the change instrument dialog, the first number is the bank and the second number is the program change number or the patch. So I believe the configuration is Bank:PC <instrument name>

GM2 requires certain Banks to have certain instruments. I think the Banks in MC are based on GM and may not correspond directly to all of the extended instruments in GM2 . I think for the most part things are going to match up, but there may be some undefined instruments like 1:0 Wide Acoustic Grand in GM2 - which would likely default to 0:0 Acoustic Grand in MC.

What does it mean? Like Greg said the file will open and assign instruments; but perhaps some of the extended GM2 instrument definitions will default to GM equivalents.

Yes I tried it and Mixcraft 10.5 does open GM MIDI files with the correct channels and instruments! Reaper and Studio One will open the files but you'll need to define the instruments and channel for each track...

I'm exploring Cakewalk alternatives...I'm a 30 year Cakewalk user and not too happy with Band Lab these days!
