first song

Post by SorrowsQuest »

Let me know what you think. "Agony Divine" is my old band. I am
just using this site to host the mp3. No vocals on this song.

Are the leads mixed well? The levels sound different on every CD player
that I listen to it on. Anyway, give me your honest opinion. What could
I do to make it better?

Can't listen to it without creating an account. Can you put it on a regular server somewhere?

Whoops, I did not realize that. Where would I find a place that would allow me to do that?

Yep that works, just make sure you avoid the pop ups and stuff.
I would say that the first thing i noticed with this mix is that the drums (not the hat or cymbals) are buried in the mix, bring them up.
Second, mid range is your friend, don't kill it on every instrument :-)
I like the clean guitar tone in the middle though.
The lead tone is very very buzzy, flatten the eq out on it, don't kill the mids and don't boost the highs.
Solo's generally have actually more mid range in them than a rythm track, it helps bring them out front.

Cool, I will give it a try. You have good ears becasue I did cut the mids
on everything. I am mixing with headphones so I am having a hard time
judging some sounds. I will try your suggestions. Thanks!

About the drums, Do you normaly set all the individual drum levels at 100%?

No, it depends on the level of the recorded instrument as to what I set the level in BC to.
Look at the rock and blues kit in BC, I set that up.
You can send me you BC project file for the song and I will adjust it to what I think would be right, and then you can get an idea from there.

Hell yeah!!! That is very cool of you. What email addy should I send it to?
What do you need. A copy of the Beatcraft file? I am using the "Classic"
VTS Plugins...does that make a difference?

Also, The file has been changed. I took your advise and raised the level of the kicks and snare Also, I lowered the cymbols.

Cool, I sent it. I hope this does not count as a free mastered song? :?

I would like to send you guys a song for mastering...that is, after
the vocals are finished. :)

This won't count as mastering, it's just a simple BC adjustment.
I see the file, so I'll grab it and work on it within a day or so.

done

Post by Acoustica Eric »

Ok, the file is done. I did not change it drastically because it's your song. I just equalized, leveled and reverbed a little differently.
One thing I have learned about effects on drums like reverb, when it sounds like too much, it's perfect. Why? Because when you add all the other instruments, the verb gets drown out some.

Holy cow, man. The adjustments you did made a big diffence! It makes
the kit sound much tighter!

I am a guitar player not a drummer I have never messed with drum sounds until now.

Thanks a lot. I will post the song with the new drum sound tomorrow.

Thanks again!!!

Glad you like it. Take note of the adjustments on nyquist eq. A parametric eq is for killing precise frequencies not taking down a whole bunch at once.
EQ with a graphic first, then use a parametric to get rid of annoying rumbles or highs that need to go. Graphic EQ's can't do this because one slider pulls a bunch of frequencies at once.
