BTW -- Information about Mixcraft describes it as having a 32-bit sound engine. If that is right that might explain why Acid, which seems to be only 16 bits runs fine on my Vista machine and Mixcraft does not.
Is is possible to change the settings on Mixcraft to process at 16 bit, to see if that makes a difference?

Mixcraft is "capable" of 32 bit, but the default should be 16. If you are using 24 or 32, change it to 16

Yes the 1.8Ghz is plenty, the problem is most likely Vista. You are not using a USB stick for added ram are you? (forgot what vista calls this function).
Also, you might make sure your virtual memory is set to exactly 3X your physical ram.
Example, if you have 128MB of ram, then VM should be set to 384
