Panning to thicken vocals?

Post by Conflict187 »

I was told from a friend who got a degree in audio and sound to duplicate vocal tracks and pan one to the left and the other to the right to thicken them and give them more body.
It works really well, even without compressors.
The problem is the sound kinda fades from one side to the other.
Is there a problem with my speakers or am I doing something wrong?

Your friend is right, but that is a very old trick to use, which also uses twice the tracks and resource to perform. Use a widening plugin instead like "wideboy" which is free and available here http://www.elevayta.net/product9.htm

that wideboy plugin isnt free anymore...I think they are charging 90 cents to download it.

I tried to download it however it asks for a 90 cent bandwidth fee.

I have paypal and could of easily paid the few cents however I kind of wanted to try it before I go through the hassle of doing the whole paypal thing.

It is still free, there is a more comprehensive version called "wider boy" that is $29.95 (I think).
I just downloaded it, no 90 cent charge.

Eric,

Using the link provided above, http://www.elevayta.net/product9.htm, I just tried and see:

-------------------------------------------------------
Click the button below to pay the $0.90 bandwidth fee. After payment you will receive a download link by email.

< snip >

Note: Due to the popularity of this product we are now charging a small bandwidth fee of $0.90. This is non-refundable
and does not cover support.
-------------------------------------------------------

From where did you download this?

What version of Mixcraft are you using? Have you tried it with 4.5 build 116?

Try offsetting the sounds just a hair, like 15 milliseconds or so and see how that sounds.

If by sound fading, you mean volume fading, you could move the volume graph on the sound panel to compensate. As for the panning technique taking up room, you could set up a separate project just for vocals, record your vocals panned, then mix it down to MP3 and use that in your main project. That way, you still get the effect, but only lose the one track you would lose to vocals.

How did you get it free? If you obtained a serial number illegally then yes of course you need to pay for it.

If you're a registered owner of Mixcraft 4, the upgrade to 4.5 build 116 is free.

We only charge upgrade fees for major updates, like from 3 to 4 or 4 to 5.
