Any ideas what a good mic for vocals on my 2i2 would be?

Post by marc32123 »

I know there are basically only two types of mic's from talking to my father about it, a condensor and a dynamic. I also know that a condensor is better able to pick up noise that is farther away from the actual mic. Right now I am using a cheap AKG D 8000 S. It wiggles where the connection of the cord to the mic is at, and I am picking up sounds I don't want from it when recording. I am looking to upgrade to a new mic, but am not really looking to spend too much. I think a dynamic mic would suit me better since I live in a household where there is constant noise. Any idea's of what would be a good mic for around 50-100 dollars?

My opinion through ownership of all 3 mics mentioned...

No question - at the top of your price range the AKG D5 is unbeatable.

Cheaper and just as good as a Shure SM58 is its clone - the Behringer XM8500

Thanks I just picked up the AKG D5 off ebay....I know this is probably a really dumb question, but I just like to double check things. This is the one you mean right?

Yep, that's the one Marc - you won't be disappointed!

Just remember to have your 2i2 switched to 'line' when you plug it in.

Take a look at this mic: MXL 990 (£79) it has really good reviews. Have a look at these videos too:

I have the MXL 990. it's a good mic but the MXL 990s is a bit more versatile.
I like the 990 but it is a bit "sterile". pony up the coin & get an AKG perception 220 or even better a 214 and never look back.

Just to add to the chatter about condenser microphones, I recently bought a Fame C01 Deluxe. It's brilliant. A bit smoother and less sibilant than the Behringer B-1, a bit cheaper (£61 in the UK), and able to pick up the lower harmonics of my baritone voice a bit better. No level pad switch, but an LF roll-off switch accessible by removing the housing, although I never use it anyway.

The funny thing is that it looks like it has the same Chinese 1" cartridge as the B-1, and with much less circuitry, yet sounds better.

Hmm,I have a couple of those. older ones that work fine.
I wouldn't doubt if you have a cold solder joint or loose connection in the switch resulting in a ground issue that's causing the noise.
