So, I'm leaning heavilly towards Focusrite (probably a 6i6) BUT, I regularly use an external compressor and it doesn't have any inserts. Does the control software enable me to route the output back to another input? So would I be able to plug a mic into Input 1, route the output to output 1, run that through a compressor and have the output from the compressor run into Input 2, then route that to Mixcraft via the USB connection?

I can't do that. The compressor runs at line level so it needs to be inserted after the interface's mic pre's.

I've had problems with USB audio interfaces in many DAWs.
I use a laptop with windows 7 x64. 16 Gb Ram, i7 and so on...
Here are my experiences with USB audio interfaces so far:

ALVA NANOFACE - Worked until a couple of days after warranty ended, it just stopped working completely and I got rid of it. Drivers were unstable in some DAWs.

Tascam US 366
Drivers work in many DAWs but poor Preamp, did not work well on large projects.
If on a budget this one is ok.

ZOOM R24
Bad driver stability in many DAWs. Poor Preamps.

ROLAND OCTA CAPTURE.
Great driver stability in every DAW I have, works great with Mixcraft 7 pro. Great Preamps, many ins and outs.
sounds good. Best and most stable USB audio interface I've used so far. Recommended.
