Audio to midi

Post by BillW »

My request seems simple. Once I've recorded a guitar solo I'd like to translate it to tabs. A midi file can be converted to tabs but is there reliable software to go from audio to midi? I've looked at expensive things like Intelliscore but I don't need for it to pick out various instruments in an mp3 file. . Just the already recorded guitar. . Any suggestions?

Mixcraft 8 Pro (32bit) runs fine on a Toshiba Satellite C55-B laptop with a wimpy Celeron N2830 (dual core). Now using 64bit on a "less wimpy" Dell 660S/Dual Core Pentium/8GB RAM.

davefk - That was kind of condescending don't you think?

BillW - I have tried many audio to midi programs and none really work great. Particularly for electric guitar because the distortion causes all kinds of ghost notes to be detected in the conversion software.
The truth is, midi is just data, like a text file. So converting wave form audio into data is pretty difficult if not impossible to get perfect. Imagine trying to listen to a son and then type it into a txt file. You would have no clue what to do.

Thanks for the responses. Even the sarcastic one. Of course I've searched. That's how I found intelliscore. They all seem too good to be true for the price. Anyway I just want to hopefully transcribe a clean guitar solo recognizing it will be far from perfect. If I hit on something good as I'm improvising it would be nice to be able to transcribe it easily.

Eric - in your experience have any you've tried come close?

I had that Intelliscore and after you download it & go through all the hoopla it only lets you do 9 seconds of audio @ a time. it's not "free"

There was a freebie that did OK with an acoustic track. But that's because there's no distortion. And it was very difficult to figure out. If I remember the name I'll let you know, but I'm sure it's doing the exact same thing as all the others.

I knew that Intelliscore was expensive and the trial version was very crippled. I wasn't clear in my post - but I thought even for $100 to $200 if it could do all it claimed it would be cheap.

Eric - I guess even with a "clean" electric guitar feed there would be extraneous sounds that the software might misinterpret as notes. The whole thing may not be worth the trouble, but I haven't given up hope just yet.

Another idea - what about trying to play it using Jam Origin or Guitar Pro 6 (not free I realize but cheaper). Any experience with those to transcribe guitar solos as midi?

OK - Jam Origin might work but costs $100 and that doesn't help me for something I've already recorded.

Guitar Pro looks like you either write the score by hand or create a midi file first (using Jam Origin I guess or a midi keyboard.) So I write a guitar solo using a keyboard? Or transcribe a performed solo note by note by hand (not horrible I guess since I can use Mixcraft to slow it down without changing the pitch.

No magic answer I guess. I'm going to search the forum for reactions to Guitar Pro. Right now it's <$25 on Amazon so it seems worth the small investment if only for learning from exisiting tabs on the internet.

You are absolutely right... It makes your guitar into a MIDI device strictly with software, but you would have to re-record what you have already done. I tried the trial version with my son and his guitar when it first came out. With some tweaking, I think it would work.

the http://www.sonuus.com/products_i2m_mp.htm that Pete mentioned does the same thing but with a hardware interface.

Good luck

I'll keep both the Sonus hardware and Jam Origin software options in mind. But at $100 for either one, probably not worth it for my limited use. Thanks for the feedback.

I do not have this model but I do have the precursor to it by the same company.

This is it here.

It's fun to play around with but it is monophonic, no chords, and when you played faster lead lines it did not sound to good. Mine only has a midi connector also. No usb. So I cannot say how improved the new one is.
I also see they have a bass version now too.

I do not think it would help the original poster unless he just wanted it for slower melodic single note leads.
