The bear music video

It`s not about bears though the title wants you to believe so. It would actually be very interesting to hear what people picture in their mind when they listen to it (if they can hear through my english-norwegian accent)

The track itself features Mixcraft`s studio drums, Monster Staccatos (kontakt 5) from Cinematic Strings , Guitar Rig 5 for the guitars (except for the jazz guitar in the start).

I used the SE Electronics X1 vocal pack for recording the vocals.

Also, an american guy helped us out on the narrator voice in the middle of the track (and in the end). First we tried with our own Thor Heyerdahl English. That didnt work out. This guy "Matthew Olson (Mimix - Youtube)" did a really great job.

The handpainted picture was picked from Chuck Black (the artist behind www.wildlifeandart.com). Check out his works. He drew this picture in 8 hours at high school.
Impossible not to like

On this track I did vocals for the first time. Hopefully also the worst I ever recorded Maybe I should have used socks on the mic. There`s too much sibliance in the track. I`ve already lowered all of the "Sss" manually. First I tried some plug ins, but they just changed the whole voice part. On a later occasion I have to redo it

I can honestly say this is one of the most powerful things I have listened to / watched in a long time. Clearly you spent a great deal of time producing this (both visually and sonically) and it shows!

I hesitate to make comparisons as this feel so much like something that stands proud in its own right. But you know that is just what I am going to do

To me there were very strong David Gilmore influences there - but it also reminded me of a lot of the early British New Wave stuff (late 70's early 80's) - I loved the way that the track started very understated - built to a crescendo and then eased off. It reminded me of things like early Modern English stuff such as Drowning Man https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OO1cfd6n6pI which is meant as a compliment.

I would genuinely buy this stuff!!

I wanted to say a lot more in my previous post but wasn't sure how to say it.

The Bear put me in mind of one of my favourite tracks, Watch the Children Pray by Metal Church. As with fredfish, this is meant as a compliment, not a criticism.

This song really makes me wish I could sing so that I could attempt to do a song in a similar vein but alas, I am unable.

When I listen to Watch the Children Pray it gives me goose bumps, The Bear had exactly the same effect.

Wow Really? Who to quote and what to say. Thanks to all of you! I honestly didn`t expect that amount of kind words.

Getting this kind of feedback is really motivating and mostly appriciated! It required a large amount of time yes, but also a lot of learning.

Fredfish: David G is my absolute favourite guitar player of all times. So I guess that explains a lot of the influence you hear. He was the one who learned me to play air guitar when I was a kid.

I think this is very good! I def hear the Floyd/Gilmore comparison, similar to perhaps something from "The Wall" perhaps.

If I could suggest a couple of things. The vocal processing pushes it back in the mix when I feel it could benefit from being more dominant. And there's a bit of excessive sibilance (Pronounced "s" and "t"s) that might become a bigger problem if the vocal is pulled out in the mix. Maybe consider a change in mic positioning and location relative to the source.

Good work and an awesome project, just some thoughts to consider for next time maybe.

Totally agree with what you say.

I`ve lowered volume on all "s" and some of the "t" that were to dominant in the mix. As I`ve understood this is the best way to do it? Some I even wanted to lower more but then I felt it kind of ruined it. I`ve also increased volume on the vocal track a little since it was actually lower than on the youtube version. But as you say, it is not enough. Some places the vocals sound too much in the background. Specially on the last part before I start "screaming".

It is also a huge difference in the sibliance between the first verse and second. Strange actually. Since it`s the same mic, recording room and volume setting. I might have changed the position of the mic tough. Maybe I should have increased the distance to the mic. Try different mic positions, and then when happy, record it all with no breaks.

I`ll defently need to focus more on it on my next track.
