Adding a new Sample Library

Post by IndypendentMusic »

I just downloaded a free sample library, Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra, to use in Mixcraft with the built-in library that comes with the product. How do I add this library to Mixcraft to where it will show up as an instrument selection on my instrument tracks? FYI the library contains SFZ files for all of the instruments if that helps.

Thanks,
Indy

Hi,

You need a plugin that can play sfz samples. There's SFZ Sample Player and DSK SF2 and a lot of others.

Okay great, I got Mixcraft to see the new library. Though now I'm getting a nasty static feedback issue. When an instrument track is soloed there is no problem and they sound great, but once I play two or more tracks at once running the new samples I get really bad static feedback, especially after I hit pause. Any advice?

Try turning up your buffer size (preferences > sound device) to reduce the glitches. :)

Just found this on YouTube:
How do you use multiple instruments? Each time I add a second sfz I get a ton of static.

Its a bug in SFZ player. Try this: create multiple copies of the sfz dll file and rename them like sfz1, sfz2, sfz3.

Sam

Well the multiple copies didn't work unless I need to make more than 4. I'll see about the buffer thing you mentioned...

Yeah that didn't do it either. It doesn't sound like its a buffer issue.

I had issues when I tried any DSK instruments last year. I could use one or 2 instances, but when I added a 3rd they would crash and take Mixcraft with it. One time it happened a friend, who is a coder, IT, and has so many degrees and certificates in computer science that they had to invent a new alphabet to accomodate all the letters to go after his name, was there and had a look and said the DSK instrument had faulty coding. He warned that especially in free VSTis you very often will be paying in limited or faulty functionality. NOT that all free VSTs are coded badly, but I now tend to avoid them. Most of my needs are met in Mixcraft. Those that aren't I'll research and buy. It costs money, yes, but since I spend a lot more time writing and a lot less searching and trying free instruments and rescuing projects that are brought down by them.

Edit: Wrote the above before my morning coffee and while in a hurry to leave. Somehow I thought someone was experimenting with a DSK player. However I still consider my friend's warning concerning free VSTis valid. He stated he has seen some of the worst coding ever in free VSTs.

I use Alchemy for Sonata, but I you have to use Zampler for the Staccato articulations as they don't work in Alchemy (It goes up a half step every other note).

The latest Aria Player that comes with Garritan stuff plays .sfz files too. I use it to play my Alchemy samples all the time
